Introduction

Know Your Score

We use this exercise to learn about what drives you rather than what you do. Langley Innovations has eight mindsets that are core to who we are and who we partner with.

How to Use It

For each of the eight mindsets: (1) Read the four statements in the scorecard table, (2) rate yourself on which statement best identifies where your mindset lies now, (3) where you’d like to be in the future, and finally (4) take note of any insights or actions for later reference.

Good People Doing Good

Use the scorecard below to rate yourself 1–12

Work is work and I punch the clock waiting for the weekend. The people I work with and how the result of the work I do are a drain on my energy and happiness but I don’t care.
4
5
6
I try to curate coworkers and projects that motivate me and minimize the time I spend with toxic people and projects. However, if the opportunity is big enough or the credit great enough, I’ll take on other projects.
7
8
9
I really don’t care if the people I work with like me or I like them nor if the work I do makes a difference in the word. If I get paid well or advance my career, I’m content.
10

Life is short and material success comes and goes. I know I am at my best and happiest when I’m working with good people who are doing good work and I simply avoid the rest.

Challenge the Assumptionsn

What has worked will always work. People need to focus on executing better and stop wasting time thinking about alternatives; after all that is why we got here.
4

6
When I’m not finding the success I’m looking for, I question is it the method that is wrong or is it because the methods are based upon flawed assumptions or facts that changed.
7
8
9
I actively work to shut down and restrict those who want to challenge known experience and proven success; the grass isn’t greener on the other side.
10
11

The world is an ever changing organism... I must evolve with it and therefore seek to understand the base assumptions guiding our decisions and actions and challenge them.

I don’t like working with people who think differently than me, it’s the pinnacle of frustrating inefficiency. Data and numbers minded people should sit over there and creatives on the other side.
10
11

The tension between applying creativity and minding the numbers is my favorite place to sit. It’s there that I find myself surprised and challenged and the biggest breakthroughs.

Character Over Reputation

Use the scorecard below to rate yourself 1–12
1
2
3
My reputation and how others see me is everything. I will protect what others think to whatever degree I can even if it means being dishonest or taking advantage of a situation.
4
5
6
I am focused on the type of person I want to be but also am aware of what others think of me. There is a tension here for me in focusing on who I want to be and what others want me to be I live with.
7
8
9
My pedigree and awards are how I judge myself and how I present myself to be judged by others. They represent the kind of person I am and what I am capable of.
10
11
12
Reputation comes and goes and is a faulty way of looking at others because it can be easily manipulated. Character is built with discipline and time and ultimately is what I’m focused on for myself and others.
